Week 3.4.1 Structuring your story - a simple approach

This is just a short post about story structure. I hope that you have all been attempting a story. The best thing is just to find your inspiration and decide on characters, and then just write to start off without worrying about structure. Afterwards, when you start the editing process, is the time you rearrange, add to, subtract, change etc. Here are some thoughts:

1. The very simplest explanation of a story.is    It has a beginning, a middle and an end.

2. For longer more complicated stories authors often use the Freytag Pyramid drawing as a guide showing how a story progresses.

3. The main elements of a story in a simple form are:

•Plot
•Character/s
•Conflict and resolution
•Theme
•Setting

4. A document for teachers from StoryJumper elaborates on this and outlines the seven steps to creating a story.  I like it very much. I am going to write a second post on it after this. (Story Jumper is an amazing web tool for writing stories but we won't be focusing on it in this course)

5. The worksheet from StoryJumper that summarises this can be be found here:
http://www.storyjumper.com/files/worksheet.pdf  This is definitely worth downloading.

6. Did you know that there are said to only be seven types of plots in stories!
